Ferrosilicon Procurement: Ensuring Quality in Steel Deoxidation

2026-04-200

Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is a cornerstone of modern steelmaking, serving as a critical deoxidizer and alloying agent. However, procurement challenges often undermine its performance and cost-effectiveness.

The most pressing issue is quality inconsistency. Products labeled as FeSi75, the industry standard for high-purity applications, frequently test below 70% silicon content. This deficiency reduces deoxidation efficiency, leaving residual oxygen in molten steel that causes porosity and brittleness in final products. Equally problematic are excessive impurities: sulfur levels exceeding 0.05% can trigger hot shortness, while aluminum contamination above 1.5% disrupts weldability.

Supplier reliability is another major concern. Many small-scale producers lack proper environmental permits, operating illegally and facing sudden shutdowns due to regulatory crackdowns. This instability forces steel mills to scramble for alternative sources, leading to production delays and price spikes. To mitigate these risks, buyers should verify suppliers’ production capacity through on-site audits, checking for operational electric arc furnaces and raw material stockpiles.

Contract clarity is also essential. Ambiguous terms regarding delivery timelines and quality acceptance criteria often result in disputes. For example, a vague clause like “delivery within a reasonable time” can lead to three-week delays, costing mills millions in lost output. Contracts should explicitly reference international standards such as ISO 5454 and specify penalties for non-compliance.
